This is advanced notice of this year’s course, which is organised by the Churches on Walney.

The course sessions will be held at St Columba’s beginning Thursday, 1^st March.
Details will be published in the Newsletter when they are known and added here as soon as they are available.

WOMEN’S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER – FRIDAY, 2nd MARCH

This annual ecumenical event, for the Barrow area, will be held this year in Sacred Heart church. It starts at 2:00 pm. The speaker will be Bernadette McIntosh of CAFOD.

The theme for this year’s Day of Prayer is: “Let Justice Prevail” and the service will be based on a form of service developed by women in Malaysia. It is expected that 3 million people worldwide will take part in this event.

Making Space for God in Our Daily Lives – March 7th to 9th

Sister Margaret Fielding from Glasgow will be presenting a series of four talks in which we will learn to recognise God in the ordinary events and experiences of our lives.

It will offer help in different ways of praying: imaginative comtemplation of scripture, Lectio Divina, body prayer, praying with icons, poetry, or painting, etc.

This ‘mini-mission’ provides us with an ideal way of giving up some of our precious time to God during Lent and should bless us with a better understanding of how we can then make time for Him and for prayer in our daily lives.

LENTEN LUNCHES

SACRED HEART
Lenten lunches will begin on Wednesday, 29th February and run through to the Wednesday of Holy Week. Soup and Sandwiches are on offer each week for £2 per person.
Served in the Social Area, between 12:00 and 1:00 pm.
Everybody is welcome. Bring a friend – or two – or more!
All monies raised will be donated to Charities, to be selected during Lent.

SAINT COLUMBA’S
Hunger Lunches during Lent will be held in the Presbytery on Fridays at 12:00 noon.
(24th February, 2nd March, 9th March, 16th March, 23rd March, and 30th March)
Everybody welcome – Donations to CAFOD.

Lenten Services and Events 2012

Lent begins this year on Wednesday, 22nd February.

Ash Wednesday – Mass and Distribution of Ashes
– St Columba’s – 9:30 am
- Sacred Heart – 6:30 pm

“The light is on for you”
- An hour of Confessions every Wednesday, 7 pm to 8pm
This is the initiative sponsored by Bishop Michael, where churches throughout the Diocese will be open for Confessions. This will provide an additional opportunity to take advantage of the benefits of the, often forgotten and sometimes avoided, Sacrament of Reconciliation. Obviously, with a reduced number of priests serving the deanery, all churches cannot be open every week

In our parishes, this will be on the following occasions:
29th February          St Coumba’s
7th March                 Sacred Heart
28th March              St Columba’s
4th April                   Sacred Heart
There will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament during each of these periods.

Additionally, there will be Confessions every week at St Mary’s, Duke Street, Barrow

Stations of the Cross
- Tuesdays at Sacred Heart, 6:30 pm
- Fridays at St Columba’s, 6:00 pm

Easter Services

Our joint parish celebrations of the Easter Triduum Services will be held this year at Saint Columba’s church, in line with our policy of alternating Easter and Christmas services between the two parish churches.

Service times will be announced in the near future, as soon as they are confirmed, on the Mass Times page and the Easter Services and Events page (which will include all Easter Season-related events).
